Cool trick
A cool trick I learned in the Navy is make yourself so invaluable that they cannot do without you...

Spot on. I work for a publicly funded institution and due to massive state budget cuts, there were layoffs recently, and most the people who were laid off were laid off for a reason: because they weren't very productive workers.

If the company you work for would have to hire at least 2 (prefferably 3) people to replace you, then you are doing something right. If you are valuable to your organization they will strive to find a place for you. Regardless of your skillset, if your job is one that can be easily outsourced to some guy halfway around the globe, then your job is probably very boring anyway.
