Remote code execution is remote code execution, whether its via an OS-provided component, or even a Flash plugin for Firefox. The only thing that would reduce its criticality is if you're running with less priviliges (e.g. protected mode in Vista).

IE crashing shouldn't bring down the desktop since iexplore.exe and explorer.exe are separate processes. Even though they share a lot of the same code (prior to IE7), one crashing shouldn't affect the other. (Note that this requires you to use IE by double-clicking the blue "e" and *not* by typing an URL into a Windows Explorer address bar -- if you do the latter, you will be browsing in explorer.exe which you usually don't want.)
