norton software
Hi Folks

Norton: Without prejudice

Major Grips which, will mean that we will not be investing in Semantic products for any of our PCs and NL edit suites next year.

1) It crashes third party video production hardware spectacularly with the blue screen of death. We have to disable everything to do with Semantic before we can conduct any video production, this is a known problem from other users. We have only tested this with Adobe Premiere and third party hardware we dare not try it with Avid or anything else that might hold up production.

2) Norton is too system heavy, everything is much slower after and installation.

3) One system we uninstalled Norton IS 05 to install Norton SW - a real challenge! After in installing IS 05 it wouldn?t load again except in safe mode. It took a day to get the system back up and running, only to find that after installing Norton SW 06 it found nothing wrong! Waste of a pricey days production on our main edit suite. Window?s own Go Back eventually saved our bacon in this task.

4) Norton SW 06 just will not let us have control on or off with Intrusion Protection.

5) On another PC edit suite Norton IS 06 won?t let us on the Net now and deactivated our ISP software.

6) Norton clearly has insufficient staff to cover technical telephone support and I am interested to see from my phone bill whether or not I have paid for being on hold for ever.

7) On first installation Norton SW Premire 06 was unable to assume that while installing the Go Back module it didn?t need to pack data from over a terabyte of additional video production hard drives. Surly as systems get larger it should have a line of code to check the size of drives for this operation and at least give the user control over what drives Go Back should affect i.e. the ?C? drive, which is normally the only drive that gets any problems anyway! Out of morbid curiosity we let it try and sort it self out, it took eight hours, then came up with a message that ?sometimes it may take 30 minutes to install Norton?, it then fell down and we had to de-install and reinstall the whole thin again, excluding the Go Back function. Though we still have problems with the intrusion module...

While I cut my teeth on BBCs and Industrial big box Amigas in the old days, I feel sorry for people who hit these problems who are new to computing.

The opinions in this document are purely a product of our own battles with NS products and as no communication has been achievable with Norton which meet our business needs.

What Norton clearly don?t realise is that while it is moderately irritating for a basic PC user for a business system they waste real money and damage PR by in what seems to be insufficient bench testing.

Regards to All

Rick
