Good job for tracking it down, but you missed something about the nature of this type of file, that it self replicates. Not only is it on this one particular server, but it is probably on several hundered others by now. It is not AOL's responsibility to close down the site or to file a lawsuit, but they did block the IM's that carry the message, link, and file. Besides, who are they going to sue? The people who happen to be infected? It's not likely that they wrote it and put it on their own servers, or that the person who wrote it posted it on their personal website. Sure AOL could inform the site hosting company, but all they could do is clean the file off and maybe trace where the infection came from and possibly where else it has procreated. If companies were to spend the time and money it takes to track down every virus, trojan, worm, etc., there would be few computer companies left because most would have financially ruined themselves on dead ends, cold leads, and plenty of other non-income generating situations. None the least of which would be sueing the offending hacker, who probably lives with their parents and can't even afford a good suit for court. If you can talk MS into it, all the better. I'd love to see Bill penniless, not that he'd put his own money into it anyway. I bet the guys at Google could figure out a way to at least break even, if they tried.
