OS Core Functions
What do I need my personal computer operating system to do for me?

Provide a consistent, abstract representation of my machine hardware that my software applications run on. My software applications just can't handle the hardware complexity otherwise.
Recognize and accomodate new hardware when it is added.
Facilitate the installation and execution of my software applications that process, manipulate, store and organize my personal information.
Provide a graphical user interface that shows the current state of both my machine and my software applications. As a human being, I can most easily visualize ideas using images and structured text.
Always be ready to execute any of my software applications, even if others are currently executing. I can drive and sing at the same time, so why shouldn't my machine be able to multitask as well?
Provide a way for me to graphically copy a piece of my personal information from one executing software application and paste it into another.
Provide a standard way for my software applications to send messages to one another.
Prevent other people from accessing my software applications and personal information.
Provide low-level graphical and/or text-based tools for configuration, monitoring and health maintenance.

What don't I want my personal computer operating system to do?

Remember or monitor my activity.
Be pre-installed on a machine.
Require special activation that is dependent on any type of network.
Include unremovable low-level middleware that I may or may not use.
Include unremovable high-level applications that I may or may not use.
Crash, hang, become confused, become non-responsive or die.
Execute any program or service without my permission.
Communicate with any network without my permission.
