They have not built any of these functions into the kernal - the OS (broadly defined) yes, but perhaps that is semantics.

Now check this out. Microsoft makes their operating systems. They provide them and tailor them for markets as they see fit. They design embbeded for a specific purpose and a specific market. Desktop Windows is for a specific purpose and a specific market. If they want to sell it only to Nigerian foot soldiers, they can. If it is so important to you to have an OS that is modular and does not use the Windows model, buy one. Windows simply does not meet your needs. Find something that does. This inane idea that Microsoft (or any vendor) has to tailor their product to a few diehard whiners is just that, inane. THEY DON'T WANT TO BUILD YOUR PRODUCT.

One last point. You need to study up on the Microsoft Antitrust cases. There is no "court ordered remedy that users should be able to remove functionality they don't want." There is a settlement with the US Justice Department and sanctioned by the US District Court for the District of Columbia that Microsoft will include a "utility" in Windows to permit users to substitute other vendors products as the default interfaces for web browsing, media playing and a few other functions. But NO functionality integrated into Windows was required to be removed. You may be shocked to learn that the functionality integration issue was never finally adjudicated by the Court. It is still entirely legal in the US, though the EU has made a ruling with respect to media player that will receive further judicial scrutiny.
