MS does weld stuff into the OS to avoid remedies
IE is not bolted into the OS kernal. Neither is Windows Media Player.

Yes they are. MS does not allow them to be removed from the OS. Users who want to run a server without a graphics card for instance have no need for IE or WMP but MS does not allow them to be removed from the OS under the pretense they need this stuff for their own applications like startup screens and update code to work properly. Very clever but very much against the spirit of the court ordered remedy that users should be able to remove functtionality they don't want.

In fact, part of the argument that Microsoft opponents used in proving that these things are not intergal to the OS was Windows XP embedded, which is essenssiality Windows without this stuff.

But the whole point is that MS had to take the step of building a seperate OS which did not include the "free" stuff which OEM's did not need. So, ya can run a cash register without IE but not a computer in MS's strategy. Since MS will not sell Windows Embedded in the retail channel, users have no option but to run IE on their box.

Make no mistake. MS learned that making SW removable can lead to it being removed so they have gone out of their way to weld stuff into the kernal which 100% belongs in user space not system space. Bad design comes back to haunt when you have 100s of millions of "security holes" deployed. The class action suit at the end of all this is gonna be a real drag on the profits!
