You either don't understand or are ducking issues
Apps are not integrated into Windows XP, functionalities are.

Your stretching the truth abit here. MS is the one saying removing the media player app will cripple the OS. Its also widely known that MS claimed to move the applications into the kernel for performance but really did it for antitrust related reasons.

Its widely known that MS refactored IE to move it into the kernel to eliminate the possiblity of users removing it. In Win95/98 IE support libraries were simply included in the system libraries making most users unable to remove it unless they were skilled enough with a linker to rebuild the libraries themselves. Since several folks did it, MS took the extrordinary step of moving the library and application "functioinality" as you put it into the kernel itself. So, now ya got to kill FileManager to remove IE and most folks basically give up (since there are obviously bombs planted if you are silly enough to try).

So, while MS can claim removing "apps" from the OS kills the experience, the user base increasingly abandons Windows as a viable server platform with every additional set of application related security holes MS builds into the kernal to avoid antitrust issuse. Ya see, trust goes two ways and MS has lost most of its customer's good will.
Information access and display are, multimedia access and play are, networking is, graphical display is and other capabilities are. It all depends on what you want. If you want to drive a Model T, buy it and drive it and enjoy it and get out of it what you can. If you want something a bit more modern, buy it and get out of it what it provides. I don't see all that many Model Ts around today.
