Perhaps you missed the first 50 years of computing?
And they can probably reduce the time it takes to create patches by making Windows a truely modular OS..

Fact is Joe Sixpack, and both his Grandfather and Grandmother have dealt with complicated things like "passwords" since they were 6 years old and built their secret treehouse fort. Technology back then was two cans and a tight string but they knew not to talk too loud or they would be overheard.

This whole "joe sixpack can't handle security" nonsense is simply an excuse to cover up the facy that MS doesn't understand security. Never did, and they are more than willing to tell you themselves its their top priority to learn security.

So, if Joe Sixpack don't want it, why is MS making security its top R&D objective? To complicate Sixpack's experience or to complete the total lock out of competitors applications from the OS? Want to guess which one?

Look at the XBox, try to get a certificate from MS to allow a version of LINUX to boot up on the XBox ... ya can't! Imagine, if you could release a Linux disk on XBox overnight it would be the best selling app on the platform and would obviously drive up sales to the point the boxs cost to build was lower than its sales price. In other words, MS would prefer to lose money on the XBox than risk allowing customers to run the SW they want on it (even if they get their royalty).

Just a glimpse into the "trustworthy computing" future. I would be very suprised if MS is investing in making Joe Sixpack's experience too complicated as you aptly point out!
