I think some of you are not getting this right.
IE is not bolted into the OS kernal. Neither is Windows Media Player.

In fact, part of the argument that Microsoft opponents used in proving that these things are not intergal to the OS was Windows XP embedded, which is essenssiality Windows without this stuff.

Microsoft's argument about the integration has been very weak on this point. Really, when they say the OS is "crippled" by not having IE or Media Player, they mean to say that out of the box you won't have the tight integration of these apps WITHIN the OS, which to be honest, I think the average use likes the integration. But that's another story.

I think that Microsoft is putting so many resources into security that they will get better. And to be honest, most of these security issues are completly avoidable any way, given good admin practices anyway. What they really are try to do is give users security without much thought or effort, and that's just pln difficult, no matter the platform.

Good security adds another layer of complexity. It doesn't come for free, even with Linux and UNIX.
