I hear you talking
Some of the ideas sound promising. Software quality especially. But using the "active" word is rather scary when talking about security. I noticed he started with a disclaimer just in case SP2 bombs. More security alerts just means more security issues and not more responsiveness. Windows 2000 was actually Microsofts best OS to date and wasn't plagued by as many flaws. As a matter of fact, excluding pakaged services such as IIS, Windows 2000 is just plain stout. It was when MS took 2000 and started trying to make everything "an integral part of the kernel" to keep the DOJ from forcing removal of applications included with the OS, that a monster of uncontrollable size was born. XP as it is now, SP2 or not, is unfixable because it is no longer just an operating system. And all the non-OS code that they forced into the heart of the OS has simply trashed what was once a promising OS. This is why the flaws became so much more numerous. You can't put apps in the kernel because they have nothing to do with an OS. This leads to something other than a true OS and only an OS can be an OS. One of the biggest fiascos was making the IP protocol an integrel part of the OS. They simply built a "hiway" right to the heart of the OS and forgot to figure out how to stop unwanted traffic. SP2, probably more smoke screens, but we will find out pretty soon.
