MS on the right track ...
This is absolutely the correct and sane approach to IP. Some things are truly innovative and most worthwhile to protect with vengence. But other minor 'innovations' (if one can call them that), and that includes most software techniques, are actually more valuable to the developer if they are freely seeded abroad, thus making them indeed universally accepted and undisputed standards which benefit all players and most of all the key developer itself. Lets face it. It MS's web standards don't work with other products due to the fact that competitors are unwilling to license them, that would only create bad feelings toward Microsoft from their own customers. Not only that, it would hold back the very technologies they represent. There is a fine dividing line between making IP pay and making IP work. In some cases a developer should definately hang tough. In other cases they should only adopt IP protection as a defensive move to make sure that no one else attempts to use their own technology to perform extortion against them. There are after all unscrupulous operators out there (SCO for example).
