Symantec info is always suspect regarding Apple/Macs
Symantec has a serious motivation to trumpet security faults in OS X. It goes the heart of their business model. Symantec does not make much of income from Apple customers, particular now that almost all of them have moved to OS X, nor do they particular care about this small percentage of users.

What they DO care about if their Windows customers. As long as the media and Apple point out the fact that OS X is far, far less vulnerable to the various viruses out there, Windows customers start to expect and demand similiar protections from their OS. Microsoft has already started to respond, and the next version of Windows will improve in this regard.

But if it were not for Apple and OS X, Microsoft might have moved much slower in this regard. Make no mistake. Symantec has made a fortune and grown tremendously in a world where computers are constantly attacked by viruses, and users fear safety and security of their systems. If an OS does a good job of protecting itself, this is bad news for Symantec. Indirectly, OS X has been bad business for Symantec, and the company has gone out of its way to dismiss the security built-in Mac OS X. That said, OS X is far from perfect and certainly does have vulnerabilities that will always need to be addressed. But don't trust Symantec to provide you with unbiased information about these flaws.
