I constantly hear statements such as "If (whatever OS) was more prevalent, there would be more virii.

This is somewhat of a myth.

The reason there are so many virii for MS is because it is so easy to write them.

Linux, MAC OSX, and others certainly have security holes but they are not nearly as easy to exploit.

Linux in particular is based on the idea that a user does not sign with a priv'ed account.

This limits the amount of damage a virii or other other exploit can do.

Only by achieving root access can system configs be altered.
