- Microsoft needs to fear no competitor
-
All of aspects that make Linux seem so superior means absolutely nothing. Microsoft has nothing to worry about ? at least not for a long time to come! Does anyone care to venture a guess as to why I say that?
In very simple language: Linux is not user-friendly!
For six years, I?ve been toying with installing one of the Linux distros. I bought Mandrake 7 back in 2000; over he years, I acquired: Redhat, Fedora Core 4, Linspire, and others. I have even tried to install one or two of them. But they defeat me every time. They constantly ask me to make decisions that are, frankly, beyond my current expertise (or lack thereof). I eventually took a course on Fedora Core 4, through Hewlett Packard?s online instructionals (highly recommended, although there is little else about HP worth recommending)!
I have studied and studied and when I thin I finally understand enough to give it another shot, something always happens during the course of the installation that totally wipes me out. I realize this is not a forum on Linux; but I?ve got to make the point that, if nothing else, Microsoft does not require a bachelor?s degree in Information Technology or in Rocket Science to install one of its OSes. I hate Microsoft with a passion! I?ve spent years out of my life just recuperating from crashes and other glitches. Then, when I?ve finally got a grip in things, it switches to a totally arcane filing system, which is not compatible with everything that has gone before, and I?m high and dry when it comes to archived material. (I now have two PCs, just to be able to use both FAT32 and NTFS.)
But Linux? At one point or another, during the installation, something will come up ? requiring input from the user ? that the user has absolutely no clue about! (E.g. What the hell is RHEL4-U3-i386-AS? In all of my reading -- and I've done a LOT of it! -- I've never before encountered that phrase or those initials...) This is USER-FRIENDLY?
I?ve even tried to learn the Linux command line basics, but most of the time what I have is insufficient to get past a given point. With MS, all you have to do is tell it your name, time zone and a few other overly simplified points of information and MS does all the work. Linux? Hell no! It wants you to complete a post-graduate course in PC terminology and acronyms, as well as know what to do in the event that your personal, private, home PC is NOT part of a home or office network!
Everyone hates Microsoft, but there is no viable alternative on the market for the AVERAGE home PC user. - Posted by: bobinvegas@... Posted on: 09/12/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
