Not delusional, maybe tad excited
Everything you say is true, however, the bottom line is that when a Windows security update fails to break anything, it is news. For Linux, (can't speak to Ubuntu debacle a few weeks back, I use SLP), with all the updates to all installed programs time after time, an update that breaks something is news.

I have 34 people friends and family on full automatic update (they never even realize it is happening) and never a peep. I like to see what is going on, so look at them before I hit accept, finalize. :-D

In 7 years of updates, 2 kernel upgrades caused problems. Rhat 7.0 one time the kernel upgrade broke USB, and SLP 9, kernel upgrade broke nvidia driver, had to resort to nv until fixed.

Of course, the reason is simply modularity. kaffeine has nothing to do with thunderbird, whereas there are probably OS functions common to WMP and Outlook. Imbedding applications into the operating system is MS's cross to bear.

I also like that whatever distro you are running, updates are provided to ALL installed apps from the distro provider (including commercial ones where they fix the app and notify the distro provider). I can remember Suse providing updated nvidia drivers when flaws/changes were made on behalf of nvidia. One stop shopping for all your updates.
