not in the real world
the only relevant point you make is:

"So this is a Microsoft problem. Interesting that MS's solution is to release their own security suite instead of fixing the problem at the OS level. A big conflict of interest."

I agree with that, but Microsoft figures it's easier to slap on a bandaid than re-engineer the skin so it can't be cut, and they can also make a tidy profit on Microsoft branded bandaids.

I am NOT a Microsoft OS fan. I wish Macs had won years ago in the beta vs. VHS computer wars. But, right now, all the other OS'es you menthioned are not relevant for 98% of the people who are using Windows. There's a whole support system built around using computers on a corporate level, whether it be UNIX, Linux, OSX, whatever. You may say these other require LESS support and that may be true, but you still need people trained on how to install, configure the systems. All the worker drones need to know how to use the applications. All the applications and hardware need to install fine (good for Mac, horrible rep for Linux on drivers and having to "tweak" the OS).

It's almost like gasoline and ethanol (or even natural gas) to run cars. There's a few autombiles out there running on alternate energy but the everyday guy with wife and two kids and SUV is NOT those people and wont' be any time soon. He has to get to work on time, kids have to get to and from school. They don't have time to go look for ethanol pumps which might not even be in some cities (or states!). yeah, it might burn cleaner, but on his everyday level he doesn't care. That's how it is with OS'es. Windows has all the support system -- just like gas stations and car dealershiops -- to keep it going for the everyday guy.
