It can cut both ways
Quite a while ago, laptops were disappearing from where I used to work. The thief got caught when he forgot to scrape one of them before selling it to a pawn shop. At the time, pawn shops were required to get the name and address of anyone who sold them something that cost more than $1500.

Hell, people have done jail time for forgetting to remove their drugs from their car before selling it or trading it in.
