Good advice that needs retelling each time
either a new technology or device type comes out. If it stored information in the first place, it may not be simply wiped out if broken or cleared off by user, you need to employ tools that wipe the existence not just the reference to the data or risk data exposure/theft whereever it winds up.

If your selling it, get either the providers or 3rd party wipe tools. If its broken and trashable, destroy it (maybe not the whole casing but at least the storage unit). Remember, when skeet shooting hardddrives and smartphones, a new hit isn't as good as a solid explosive direct hit. Even a partially broken CD can be mended, . . not so sure on a hardddrive, but if you don't hit the platter(s) you risk a diligent thief recreating the structure enough to clone off some data. Acid, . . . if it's goo it's gone.
