. . .could see flaws in software as "awesome," just because the ones that MS admits to are being eventually patched.

As far as "not keeping it a secret," it wasn't their secret to keep. It was WIDELY reported in the trade press, then MS had to choose between claiming that "it's only a problem for a handful of users" (standard tactic) or that they have a patch on the way (what they do when they can't get away with claiming that only a few users would be affected).

And the sequence was actually more like: issues were reported, denied, reported again, investigated, patch issued, problems discovered with the patch, patch to fix the patch announced, and now the world waits to see what the flaw are with the patch to the patch to the original flaw.
