and how many years did it take them??
apparently they weren't hurting for money. Every new version of MS Windows touted the most secure system, yet they weren't very secure until SP2(yes still debatable as of yet). So instead of listening to the customers they just continued to tout the same line until they noticed "oh wait, people are starting to ask us more frequently why isn't this fixed". It took them a good what 15 years to finally figure out maybe they should look into security? It wasn't customers that did this, it was competition, other OS vendors touting and poking fun of the crap that was windows. If it hadn't been for other OS's coming out and showing their advantages MS would have done nothing about it, we all know that. That is how the effort to improve security, nothing more.

As for the pubilicty, there was plenty, and what did they do? They elft exploits unpatched for years.

Summed up Anton, if it weren't for other OS's becoming viable, MS would let us sit there and the customers take it in the rear, because the people simply stood for it because they had no other alternative. Same goes for IE and any other programs that stagnated from MS until a viable alternative came to hit them. It was all about the money, nothing more, nothing less. Customers had NOTHING to do with it.
