- Inconsistent expectations

Why is software treated so differently than most other products when it comes to "vulnerabilities"? My car has tones of vulnerabilities. It is easy to break into. Anyone can crash it at will. In fact, I can be driving down the road and it is vulnerable to someone else crashing into it at any time. Auto manufacturers all know about these "vulnerabilities" but they refuse to do much about them. If I crash my car, its my fault. If someone breaks into my car and steals my wallet, its the theif's fault. You get the idea.
No one would blame the car manufacturer for these "defects", but with someware, people have developed this idea that anything short of perfection is a crisis.
Could this false expectation be based on the fact that most people have no clue about the complexity in software or assume software is built by geniuses?
Consider it a different way -- Typos, spelling/grammar error get into newspapers or books nearly every day. But the same error (a mis-typed key), can land a software company on CNN with demands for free and immediate resolution, even if the type happened years ago.
Hence the question: Is there an inconsistency in expectations of perfection for software and why?
