A LONG awaited first step
It's taken millions of individuals affected by laptop theft for the VA to finally implement a security solution, but they've done it. The long awaited first step towards advanced security measures will hopefully will set an example for other government agencies to follow.

Encryption, as well as Remote Laptop Security (http://www.essentialsecurity.com/Documents/article18.htm) should be a STANDARD when it comes to dealing with laptop computers. RLS gives the owner of the stolen laptop ability to deny access to sensitive files using ANY computer with an internet connection - that means even if the computer is lost forever, vital files will remain inaccessible to thieves.

And to the VA: better late than never.

They'd probably write their passwords on post-it's stuck to the laptop.  kraterz | 08/14/06
