There is no such thing as an absolute right. All rights are subject to other rights and this is when difficulty for judges, police and legislators occurs.

If you have been accussed of paedophilia and the data you have encrypted is supposed to convict you, you would be more than happy to prove your innocence with it. The only reason you would not want to open the information is if it proves you are guilty.

If the police have enough proof to get a search warrant or whatever it is in your country then not giving the police the encryption key is preventing the police that they have a legal right to. PERIOD!
