Depends on the user

By your own statement that Linux is currently safer than Windows for users?

For your average granny user - probably - as long as granny isn't the one who has to administer it. But if you take one Windows box (say Win2k server) and one Linux/FreeBSD box, and have two equally compentent people set them up, I really don't see the huge gap in security.

Unix has it's advantages out of the box, and even some advatages after all of the securing is done, but a blanket statement saying any version of unix is more secure than any version of windows is misguided.

The software you use is only part of the big security puzzle.
