Linux under Windows
The Security Vendors should be thinking Virtualizaton. If Vista really is just X86 oriented the OEMs will be likely running a Linux dirivitive directly over the multicore hardware layer and Vista on top of that in its own Virtual OS Machine. The middle layer (Hypervisor) VMware whatever you want to call it is where you would want security. You would not need access to the kernel of any OS being run Virtually. Red Hat has made a lot of progress here. The advantage of Linux directly above the hardware is that Linux is open source and all the vendors INTEL, IBM, NOVELL, etc contribute and the updates when needed are lightening fast - so fast that no closed source product can ever match. Hence when hardware gets tweeked to run faster Linux can take advantaged of that. The other advantage is that we will all be able to run Vista in one virtual machine and Win2000, WinME, Win95 whatever in other partitions. Look at what Apple is doing. The Apple OS is close to the hardware and through Virtualization any other OS can run.
