The reason for the add-on security industry is because of malware writers. As to why trust Microsoft (gee look no childish mispellings)? Because they wrote Windows and they know more about security for Windows than the 'tried and proven' (god I'm laughing so much I'm choking) security wares.

You can't have it both ways - either you want MS (hey look no childish $) to beef up security or you want to rely on such great stalwarts as Symantec (that's sarcasm btw).
