Despsite what you might think, the sky is not falling. We've already been through this before. If a vulnerability comes out you have a firewall and antivirus and antimalware to protect you. Although I won't doubt that your the type of guy to double click on an attachment or executable to get yourself infected.

You don't need to bother with hardware upgrades now if you want to run Vista. It will run on current hardware. If your system is a few years old then it probably won't run as well as it could.
