Phases of the moon
You should also never install a service pack if it is a full moon, or Mars is aligned with Jupiter, or it's Friday the 13th, or you had clams for lunch.

Also, if someone named Bob has ever offended you, you should never, ever, talk to anyone else named Bob again, since past history ALWAYS dictates future results with completely separate test sets, right?

Lastly, if red comes up on the roulette wheel 50 times in a row, the odds are definitely much greater that black HAS to come the next time, right?

Please.

SP's should be prudently tested and applied. They don't have to be rushed into, but neither should they be ignored because of that bad experience an admin had with an NT service pack back in 1997 (or because the numbering scheme is cosmicly cursed).

Security updates will ALWAYS apply directly to an issue you are having, so they need to become high priority to get installed ASAP. You don't need to install full SPs to get the critical security patches.

Too many admins hide behind "SPs *always* cause trouble" and "we have to test it first" when what they really should be saying is "we are too lazy/busy with other othings to bother even looking at it for 6 months."
