It's amazing how many home users aren't technically proficient.

So amazing, in fact, that many of them don't even know XP has a firewall or what a firewall is or how to find where to turn it on or off.

I think O/S software should default out of the box to the most secure configuration, and offer wizards with good explanations that allow you to change those most secure settings.

Your setup, of course, works as well; my recommendation was for the average home user, who is attempting to network two or three MS machines together to share their single broadband connection and want to do so with the least amount of hassle and technical know-how. Plugging everything into the switch requires a lot more knowledge of how to set up the networking components to point to all the right addresses and to make sure the other machines aren't vulnerable.
