re: Run Linux as root 24x7 attached to the internet...
You are absolutely correct. Unfortunately, the ravenous Linux crowd that now mandates Linux user is rather shortsighted and has the inability to reason. Mention anything anti Linux on /., groklaw.net and you're in BIG trouble and suddenly a troll.

Linux is currently better in many areas security wise, but is by no means 100% secure like some of the Linux users would like you to believe. As a point in exmaple, Ubuntu uses Sudo, which most distributions turn off as a service because of previous security issues. Using su or su - is a much better and secure way of doing things, far less prone to abuse than Sudo. Again, rootkits exist for Linux, download a binary that hasn't been checked, and voila, rootkitted. I think the guys at Debian know how to put up a secure server, but they've been cracked twice in the past 15 or so months. Redhat was also compromised, as was another Linux distribtion vendor (can't remember which one to be honest).

The average user is simply not ready for Linux. It's way to fiddly. I got sick of it after 4 of usage as my everyday workstation. I'm not back using Windows XP, and happier for it. Sure, it's not as secure as Linux, but if you do a bit of research, you can make it far safer than its defaults allow.

Some of the real problems with Microsoft Windows are that software and hardware vendors are expecting the users to have administrative rights. UAC will stop this to some extent, and already we are hearing vendors crying out in anger about having to re-write drivers etc. Tough $hit - you write drivers for a platform, then you obey the APIs set for that software platform by the vendor. If you don't like it, don't write drivers for it. Simple. Microsoft is trying to make their products more secure, Vista isn't going to be 100% perfect, but it will be better than previous versions of Windows. That has to count for something.

Just remember that no operating system is 100% secure, and if you believe that, you believe in the tooth fairy and Easter Bunny as well I suspect.
