Let me repeat what you said:

A virus/worm/trojan that does whatever it was designed to do and after success or a certain life span erases itself.

Hmmm, trying not to be paranoid. Havent' we all have experienced the unexpected demise of our OS (M$'s blue screen of death, Mac's panic, etc.) or files that we knew they should be here, or the hard drive died on us and we thought it was time to replace them since the hardware wore out?

IF the malware was designed that way we would NOT know!

As a friend of mine stated:
I am immortal!
As long as I am alive it proves my point
and
should I die I will not be able to find out that I was wrong.

Same here. After the virus commited suizide we can't prove its former existence. As long as we don't know of its existence we can't analyze and build a detector (except the heuristic ones which still ned a pattern defined).
