It looks like the Vista license may be a little more enlightened ? with up to four additional virtual PC images being covered by the one license ? but the real solution (if you aren?t already in an M$ volume license agreement ? like just about every home user in the universe?) may be to unbundle the virtual hard drive technology (I seem to recall M$ were threatening to replace the file system with a SQL based, log written, transactional mechanism at some point anyway). This ought to then provide the advantages I described ? without the license implications (and without the advantage of the sandboxes).

Perhaps the open source community could come up with something along these lines ? a software layer sitting between the O/S and the hardware that provides a transaction log of all changes requested within the O/S, with a strong set of tools to analyse and rollback/forward any changes ? and to identify ?sets? of rogue updates (from malware or processes run in error).

Could be a very attractive tool set. Go on. Tell me *ux or apple already have it? Then I?ll be jealous?
