WHY autoupdating IE6 to IE7 is something not desired?
Because the only way Microsoft will ever be able to make IE noticably more secure is by backing out their 10 year long experiment with desktop-browser integration, remove the ability of the same component to both access untrusted data AND operate outside an _application level_ sandbox, and incidentally break a huge number of third party applications that depend on this functionality.

That is the standard behaviour of every other "non-toy" browser and mail reader, whether open source (like Firefox) or proprietary (like Opera), and it's an absolute unconditional minimum standard that any software that deals with untrusted files must meet. And Microsoft has so much face invested in their ability to ignore this fundamental principle that they will never be able to ship a secure browser.

So we can't trust IE, and we can't trust Microsoft not to slip something into IE7 to break their competitors, so there's no downside to staying withthe devil you know.

After all, you're only using it to run Windows Update, right? You're not actually reading this in IE, I hope...
