Perhaps,
They have a possibly extensive list of vulnerabilities(some that may be interdependent) that they compare against patches released. In doing this they may be determining:

A. Which if any of our current exploits have been neutralized by this patch.

B. If any of the planned attacks would reveal more exploits than the ones used in the attack(conserving ammo)

C. If any of their arsenal can now be sacrificed as a diversionary attack because of diminished value due to the patches killing interdependencies


There may be a lot of strategy behind the attacks that we'll never know about.
