The solution ...
"So is the solution not to open any e-mail attachments?"

Don't open any email attachments that you weren't specifically expecting. Don't send any email attachments if you can help it... 90% of the time when I recieve an Excel or Word document the actual content would have been *more* useful as a couple of lines of text.

"Have the villains finally won?"

No, the villains won years ago. They're the people in Redmond who refused to create portable documents that were readable in any word processor or spreadsheet, and left us dependent on their goodwill. Which isn't all that good.

Don't use Microsoft's inherently insecure document formats in email. Block Office format attachments at the mail server and convert them to flat files, use an authenticated and tracable dropbox for sharing the "full quality" version if you actually need more than you get in a "CSV" or "plaintext" version.
