Your assumption is what killed you

You can have as many TCP/IP clients and servers as you LIKE IN ANY IP host, whether you consider the host a "client" or a "server". U R confused on VERY BASIC things.

Oh wow, this whole thread has resulted because you assumed I didn't understand that client and server were based on the roles of individual pieces of software and not on what OS you happen to be running at the time? Go back and re-read my posts michael and you will see that at no point did I ever suggest that XP was safe because it wasn't a server OS. In fact, just the opposite. This whole time I've been using XP as a very specific example of why you should be using a firewall, and since XP is typically regarded as a "client" host, any semi-intelligent person would have figured out what I was talking about. Your reading comprehension needs a lot of work.

Malicious code (by a drive by installs or a crappy active-X, a vb-script from a donwloaded MS office app that ran and didn't give you any signs of that) can OPEN PORTS and expect to be contacted at them.

Um, then the malware didn't get onto your computer through an open port, did it? Um, no so how did you prove me wrong? You didn't? Okay then. What amazes me is how someone could be so vehemently sure of his own intelligence while being so incredibly wrong!

In your contention "if U use your FW U R OK" because it "protects you from all the defects in the programs with open ports". This is at best WISHFUL thinkinking since clandestine code can open ports and even more so it can HIJACK PORTS used by services in your CLIENT PC and LEAVE OPEN BACK and FRONT DOORS.

And how did that clandestine code get onto your PC in the first place? Certainly not through an open port because the firewall would have stopped all such attempts. In fact, in my case, that clandestine code could open as many ports as it wanted to and it wouldn't matter since my NAT router would block all incoming connection attempts. Sorry michael, far better for the clandestine code to get its orders through an HTTP GET or an IRC channel since both of these bypass one-way firewalls. Once again, my point stands: the firewall protects me from any exploits that rely on open ports. I specifically said that it did not protect you from any other type of exploit.

you were making the same UNEDUCATED contentions as in your head you are confusing the coloquial definition of a keyword with its TECHNICAL definition

Sorry michael but it is you who assumed that I was using the colloquial definition because you so desperately wanted me to be wrong. So sorry to completely shatter you like this but it just had to be done.
