I'd say your being nieve
Those someones do exactly what you described and it's pretty simple to do at that. I don't know if you have to review firewall logs but you have people rattling the door handle like this constantly. It's automated and pretty simple to do. You can eve automate the scripts for brute force accound/password hacks. The hacker doesn't even have to do a thing till thier little tools report back with an IP address that has an open hole with a weak password/userID. Then they do thier work.

I can think of few things I could do to a Linux box with that kind of access to get me Root control. Those things might work or they might not depending on how the box is set up. Now if they are using weak passwords on obvious user accounts then chances are they haven't locked the rest of the box down and I'd get access after a few attempts.

I can do this on Linux, Solaris, Windows or what ever. If you have a stupid admin setting it up I'm in. So what's so hard to believe that an actual hacker couldn't do this?
