Do you want a more secure OS?
Symantec is doing us all a favour. By looking at the mechanisms that might be prone to exploitation by malware before the OS is released give Microsoft time to fix the problems properly, rather than the knee-jerk, band-aid approach called patching.

With the deadlines for Vista shipping, do you think that Microsoft would necessarily fix all of these problems if only they knew about them? Look what happened to the tobacco companies who knowing shipped dangerous and addictive products and thought they could get away with it.

Even though Microsoft and Symantec are now competing in the security arena, only Microsoft have the ability to fix the problems. It is like getting a second opinion from a doctor, except in this case, only the first doctor is allowed to operate.

Whether we like it or not, we do need a strong non-Microsoft security company - just like most countries have lower and upper houses in government.

The relationship between the two should not be a cosy one.

If Microsoft's foray into the security world causes other companies to exit it, because they are in a privileged position, we will all be losers in the end.

Disclaimer - I don't work for Microsoft or Symantec, but I use the products of both.
