I Agree ... But With Different Reasons
I agree: you can't litigate spam away. So long as there money in it, it will continue on. And spam is a very cost effective way of advertising.

But most spam comes from Asia -- and you can't control that. And most spam does come from nasty (or outright illegal) sources -- I mean, if you were a legitimate business, why would you fake a return address? Most does NOT come from misreading a checkbox on a web site.

Most of the spam that I get has to deal with porn, or "male enhancement". Some of has to do with online gambling. The remainder is such a small amount it's hardly worth mentioning. I would assume that I am not alone in this observation.

It's too bad that we couldn't "out" the folks that click on those types of links, or that respond to spam. If people were going to be "outed" for downloading stuff like "asian girls losing their virginity", there would be far fewer folks hitting those sites. That would eliminate the large amounts of $$$ to be made, which would eventually eliminate the spam.

Now, I'm not talking about doing away with those types of sites -- unfortunately, they are protected by our freedom of speech. I would rather suffer with the slime, than lose any more of my freedoms. I do not claim to be (or would ever want to hear about anybody being) a "public decency standards guy". It's not for one person, any small group, or a government to decide that.

But still, I would think that since these types of "customers" are replying to publicly available messages, there should be some way of displaying the public response to public messages.
