- Re: Security Programs Becomming Major Infection Vector
-
-Beginning of the quote...
The "Witty" worm writes random data onto the hard drives of
computers equipped with the Black Ice and Real Secure Internet
firewall products, causing the drives to fail and making it
impossible to restart the PCs. Unlike many recent worms that
arrive as e-mail attachments, it spreads automatically to
vulnerable computers without any action on the part of the
user."
"At least 50,000 computers have been infected so far, according
to Reston, Va.-based computer security firm iDefense and the
Bethesda, Md.-based SANS Institute."
"Most infected computers will have to be rebuilt from scratch
unless their owners instead decide to buy new ones, said Ken
Dunham, a computer security expert at iDefense."
"The thing looks like it will corrupt or crash most drives enough
so that reinstallation is going to be required," he said. "This is a
very destructive worm."
...End of the quote.-
If that is the case, if all the security venders can avoid using ActiveX/COM, then .net Framework is the way to go, although I am aware of Windows 95 but Windows 95 are very outdated.
If I were you, I would use a couple of programs to protect my computer:
FirstDefense (from Raxcon, if I remember the spelling correctly)
PerfectDisk (also from Raxcon)
McAfee Security Suite (with Virus Scan, Firewall Plus, etc.)
Webroot Spy Sweeper
Of course, I do know that those applications that I've listed doesn't use .net Framework; although I don't have any problems with those products.
(Whew, looks like I'm lucky that I don't use Norton products, BlackIce, and RealSecure...which I'm safe from those exploits but I don't want to let this happen in the future if an attacker tries to execute a flaw in FirstDefense, PerfectDisk, and McAfee Internet Security Suite, which I am better off having to stay active all the time and catch up with ZDNet News to see if there's any news comming up but I don't want to sign up for ZDNet Breaking News. And I will never ever give up hope!) - Posted by: GraysonPeddie Posted on: 03/22/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
