Actually, no, their history is more reactionary than proactive. But, in response to the big attacks, they have been reacting faster than usual lately.

I was not attempting to lay blame on anyone, other than perhaps the virus writers. This latest round of viruses did not exploit a hole, rather it convinced dumb users to do something they should not (yes, yes, we can debate ad naseum about whether it should be harder for them to do it than it was, but the point remains, the only "hole" exploited was in the user's head).

My POINT was, that a two-pronged attack such as the one the original poster described would not work BECAUSE the A-V people would patch against it (even if MS didn't) very quickly, so the destructive payload would have to be delivered before they caught it.
