the problem...
...with that strategy is that to effectively get this out there, you need to exploit a new hole or strategy/method that isn't in the anti-virus database yet and users haven't been warned about. This is how some of these things have spread so quickly lately, they managed to go widespread before the A-V people updated their virus defs. However, if the virus contains a future payload, the A-V defs will be updated before it triggers and a large percentage of the people who got it will have it removed by the time that destructive payload were to fire. So all you end up wiping out is Granny's PC and those like her, which doesn't garner that much respect in the virus-writing community.

Not saying it can't or won't happen, but to be truly effective, it would have to launch both its replication features and its destructive features very quickly one after the other to do a lot of real damage.
