Ebola vs. Flu

A computer virus like you describe is like Ebola. It would get limited distribution because of its destructive nature. Kill the host, kill the virus too.

Most are more like the flu, troublesome and easily spread, but rarely fatal. Most of the people writing these things want a 'zombie army' for spamming, DDoS, identity theft, and other nefarious things. They don't want to kill your computer, just take it over when they need it.

Now, if someone comes up with a computer "super flu" we may have trouble. It is most likely that such a bug would not use the typical exploits like age old low default Outlook security settings or use email or P2P as its main 'sharing' route. It would be more likely to use a blended stealth method that might take advantage of ports or other as yet unknown network vulnerbilities.
