I agree that if a free market exists, it is a better solution. But for all the hype about a wild and wooly world of unfettered competition, the software market is a regulated market: it depends on government enforcement of copyright monopolies. So the government is already involved, its merely a question of how involved they will be over the long haul. If you miss this point, you'll miss the WHY of how the government will expand its roll in the market.

As of today, tech have been screaming for better than two years that MS MUST break the OS-to-application connection of its IE/Outlook/Windows trifecta to stop the spread of viruses. Allowing full access to all operations of the OS from inside the mail reader is a recipe for disaster. The much vaunted MS-marketing/customer relation connection has not responded. Users, especially home users, are starting to feel powerless against the impersonal beheemoth in Redmond. When they feel powerless, they yell for the government "to do something! Anything! Whatever it takes to fix the problem!"

Yes, the cure is usually worse than the problem, but the cure is coming anyway.
