A very finite number, but that number is unknown

I have to laugh at(or with, however you wish to look at it) your analogy, it is very ironic that you would compare it to a person's condition in the hospital. At the same time though, the fact of the matter is that "critical" flaws just means that it is essential that you install the patch for that flaw, because that flaw is something that is easily exploitable and can give someone complete control over your machine.

The other fact of the matter is that with windows having over 2 MILLION lines of code (and that is as of the original release of windows 2000, meaning there will probably be over 4 million in the original release of vista), there are 2 million different places that could have a bug. Tie that into the fact that a bug can span multiple lines, and you get an even higher number of potential bugs, somewhere in the billions. The fact of the matter is that no matter how well patched ANYTHING is, new bugs will always be found. Unless your brain can process instructions like a computer and also ask what about if x happens, there is no way to write completely bug free code, with the exception of demo programs such as a hello world app that just prints the words "Hello World!" on screen and then exits.
