No, they shuld throw out the hook altogether
No, they should throw out the hook allowing the address bar to be used for files/folders altogether. Same thing with Windows exporer - don't let it use URLs.

"It saves me from doing Windows+R and type a program I want to run. Plus, Internet Explorer can let me type a physical path of my hard drive like D:\Program Files\ and browse the folder from there. No need to open My Computer."

I have about a dozen ways of accessing the program I want within a single keystroke or mouse click. I've got the QuickLaunch toolbar, five "favorite" keys at the top of my Microsoft Natural keyboad, keystroke combinations assigned to various programs, and oh, yeah, AutoHotkey does automation very nicely as well. In addition, I've also set up my software in a Windows 3.11 type system where all my application icons are in one window.

While you're sitting there typing the words "Program Files" I'm already doing productive work.

Keep the URLs and the file locations separate. The automation example he gave can be done in other ways. There are absolutely NO good reasons for URL/Filename crossovers, IMHO, not even for the sake of automation. There are other, better ways to automate.
