It's not just the 'inbox attachments'
Where I'm finding a lot of scumware coming in is via P2P sharing. Many of these programs install security compromising additions under most users' radar. Then other scum comes creeping in via the compromises. And, on top of that, users will run a trojan file they pull in because it makes titillating promises about its content, for example, seebrittneynekkid.exe.

I think you're right, many users would kill their security under any OS to do crazy things they think they want to do. Linux makes it more difficult for them to do it, but, in the end, a lot of the responsibility falls on the user to keep their system secure.
