Customers squeezed as ISPs pull trigger on viruses

Trespassing!

When an ISP and/or broadband provider scans my network, it is nothing less than trespassing. They can tell who is sending out trash by the amount and pattern of data coming out of a networks. This is done without having to violate the integrity of the data. Sniffing data is an even worse offense and is no different than wire tapping. All of the port scans done by Cox Cable, my provider, are becoming the largest source of packets rejected by my firewall. There tactics are becoming a greater security risk than the viruses they are hunting. And it is really none of their concern wether I have NetBIOS listening on port 139 or any program listening on any port. Spam and other trash never comes from any listening ports. If they would spend the resources simply educating the users instead of trying to play Net Cop, we could finally start a real and effective fight against the trash on the Internet. Educating the user is the only answer that will ever work and the only answer where everyone doesn't lose.
