If my ISP...
Were to call me, tell me there is a problem with my machine, I would thank them.

I would then fix the issue and move along.

This has to be done RIGHT though. They can't treat the customer as the villain. They have to assist the customer (not everyone is a geek) in fixing the issue, if necessary.

They also can't be too aggressive. They should give 12 hours grace period before disconnecting the connection, and make it EASY to INSTANTLY have the connection restored after the customer calls and says the issue was resolved.

In the end, it's not WHAT they do that will matter. It's how they handle it with the customer that will matter.
